This is a print of my original illustration, Baby’s First Breach.
This illustration was a long time in the making! I had the vision for it after an incredible whale watch that my family and I went on in Maui back in...I wanna say 2012. I even did a digital version a few years ago but the call to illustrate it with my markers wasn’t going away.
At the time of the whale watch, my older sister lived in Australia with her then boyfriend, now husband. Our families planned a trip to meet in person, and Hawaii was the designated halfway point. We booked ourselves onto a whale watch with @pacificwhalefoundation and it was INCREDIBLE. The ocean was just bursting. Spinner dolphins and pelicans and humpbacks breaching left and right. Our boat guide even remarked, “this is like something out of a National Geographic show!” And most memorable for me were the baby whales, breaching along with the adults. Is there anything cuter than a baby humpback breaching for the first time?? They seemed so proud and so excited. It was truly a magical day. 🐋
